We’re sure you’re probably very familiar with health insurance in its various forms, but things change constantly, and it can be confusing—and can even result in a frightening situation of “But I thought this was covered….” Let us help you figure it all out!
Basically there are two kinds of standardized health insurance: Fee-for-Service, and Managed Care. You could probably say, “they’re the same, but different,” covering various medical, surgical, and hospital expenses. Prescriptions are generally covered to a degree, and occasionally dental coverage is included to an extent. You may be familiar with the following:
These are most commonly called HMOs, PPOs, EPOs, and POS. These can provide comprehensive arrays of health services, and offer a financial incentive for the use of “plan providers.
This is a system where a doctor or health care provider is paid a “fee” for each service. They are essentially rewarded for volume and quantity of service provided, no matter the outcome.
Like managed care, this will generally be an HMO, PPO, EPO, or POS. There are higher out-of-pocket costs, but a tax-free health savings account is linked to it. To have an HSA, you must enroll in this plan.
Catastrophic Plan: This is for the under-30s, and with it you might have a lower premium, three primary care visits before your deductible is applied, and free preventive care.
